In the School of Linguistics and Cultural Studies (Fakultät III) there is an opening in the Institute for Material Culture for a


Professor (W2) "Teaching Material Culture.”


The holder of the position is limited to 5 years for first-time employees as a limited-term civil servant, as set forth in the NHG, paragraph 28.


Required qualifications are as described in Paragraph 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG)*, with the following additions:

•    Broad competence in ethnography and cultural studies, especially knowledge of the concepts underlying the study of Material Culture (as evidenced, for example, in a corresponding course of studies and/or scholarly work or teaching in the area of cultural studies and ethnography).


•    Proven teaching experience in and outside schools for a period of several years. Demonstrable familiarity with learning/teaching projects (both in and outside schools) and experience in instructional research.


•    The Oldenburg Institute uses textiles and clothing as an exemplary part of Material Culture. If the requisite knowledge and abilities – including practical knowledge of textile processes and in the identification of textile artifacts as well as knowledge of specific instructional theory and methodology - are not immediately available to the applicant, she or he must confirm a willingness to redress the situation with all due speed.


•    Proven knowledge and experience, including relevant theories and methods, in "transculturality” and "gender”, which are important for modern teaching and learning.


•    Proof of substantial involvement in applications for research projects and in attracting research money. Preferred: Experience with international cooperation and/or EU projects.


The successful applicant will be expected to take on duties from the entire spectrum of teaching, research, and self-administration in the department, including conceptual and co-ordination functions. These would include the development of, or involvement in, research projects within the faculty research clusters "Scholarly and Artistic Teaching and Learning of Material and Visual Culture” and (now in preparation) "Transculturality” or "Cultural Mobility”, and participation in departmental research projects (at the moment in the area of museology). In addition, he or she would be expected to work in joint research initiatives with other departments and faculties, such as integrated projects in teaching and learning research, to take part in the University’s Didactic Center (membership in both the Department and the Center), and participate in the coordinated research planning.


Furthermore, expectations will include the readiness to cooperate with international partner universities and to take part in regular further education in university teaching. According to University regulations (Prüfungsordnung), the language of instruction is English or German. Working knowledge of German is expected (B1-level). Since the University of Oldenburg and the University of Bremen are joined by a cooperation agreement, staff members of are expected to actively support cooperative activities.


To increase the proportion of women in academic teaching, female applicants will be preferred if qualifications are comparable. People with severe disabilities and with comparable qualifications will be given preference. The position is suitable for part-time employment.
